Sportsmanship Zone

York USA and our member clubs recognize the value of teaching and demonstrating good sportsmanship. In 2008 we created the board-level position of Director of Sportsmanship and appointed Dave Wenger as its first office holder. We have also created the Sportsmanship Zone as a mechanism to provide everyone affiliated with youth soccer in the York area with the information and resources needed to promote good sportsmanship.

Please note that many of the Sportsmanship Zone links leave the York USA website or otherwise retrieve materials from other websites. York USA is not responsible for the content of these external resources. However, we do review all materials referenced and at the time they were included herein they were deemed to be reasonably authorative and valuable. Should you encounter a referenced resource that is no longer working, is no longer of any value, or now includes inappropriate content, please email that link, identifying its point of reference (zone, topic, link name) to the York USA Webmaster.

A Message on Sportsmanship Minimize

The following video on sportsmanship was prepared by the Minnesota High School League. Designed to heighten the awareness of sportsmanship at high school events. It emphasizes respect. It also communicates a set of statewide behavior expectations that were distilled at a sportsmanship summit that included over 90 students from around the state. The video is part of the TeamUp program, designed to create a positive educational experience that promotes respect, responsibility, fairness, integrity, sportsmanship and healthy lifestyle.

While focusing on sportsmanship at high school events the message applies to all levels of competition and all spectators.

About Sporstmanship Minimize

“What is Sportsmanship?” Sportsmanship is generally defined as: Playing Fair,Following the Rules of the Game, Respecting the Judgment of the Officials, and Treating Opponents with Respect.

Some define good sportsmanship as the "golden rule" of sports — in other words, treating the people you play with and against as you'd like to be treated yourself.

But sportsmanship isn't just reserved for the people on the field. Coaches, referees, parents, and all other fans also need to be aware of how they behave during competition. Sportsmanship is a style and an attitude. Good Sportsmanship can have a positive influence on yourself and everyone around you; Poor Sportsmanship is destructive and disrespectful.

Our players learn sportsmanship from the words and actions of the adults in their lives. When the adults behave in a sportsmanlike way our children gradually come to understand that the real winners in sports are those who know how to persevere and to behave with dignity — whether they win or lose a game.
